Issue #460: Planning to Travel Overseas? Here's how to maximize your travels August 20, 2024 |
Greetings Fellow Travel Writers! . . . and WELCOME all new subscribers. Thanks for joining us.
EditorialWe continue to enjoy Seattle’s marvelous summer. No heat waves or heat domes that have fried the rest of the country. Just perfectly clear sunny days with moderate temperatures from 70–85 degrees and low humidity. Our travel plans this autumn include a trip to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in October/November. We’ve been reading about this gorgeous colonial town that is, apparently, an expat haven. We’re looking forward to exploring the town, enjoying the architecture and exploring art museums. Early next year we’ll spend a couple of months in New Zealand, catching up with my brother, two sisters and a sizable tribe of nieces and nephews and their offspring. We’ll also play tourist in various parts of the North Island. It will be summer in New Zealand and we’ll be escaping the winter weather in the U.S. Now For the Serious Stuff Here’s some step-by-step advice on planning your travel writing for the next few years. Plan Your Travel for the Next Five Years 1. Decide where you want to go in the next five years & prepare a bucket list of your top ten dream destinations. Don’t limit your travel dreams. Write down the top ten destinations you want to visit.
Here are some ideas for stories that sell
2. Write down the tourist attractions and possible story ideas for each destination. Take notes on possible cities, hotels, resorts, tours, activities, must see sites, and DMOs to approach for travel assistance.
Here's a good way to summarize your research and target potential articles
Here's a travel story idea trouble-shooting guide
4. Reach out to the DMO media reps at these destinations and let them know you’re considering a trip in the future. Introduce yourself, your travel writing portfolio, and the attractions you’d like to visit. Don’t be tempted to fabricate assignments to get free travel assistance from the media reps. Get the assignments first, closer to your dates of travel — then ask for assistance.
Here are some tips about how to get invited on press trips
5. Build your Travel magazine list from scratch, if you don’t have one.
Here's how to build your magazine distribution lists
