Issue #441: How to Market Yourself On the Road July 10, 2023 |
Greetings Fellow Travel Writers! . . . and WELCOME all new subscribers. Thanks for joining us.
EditorialOur perfect summer weather here in Seattle continues. With daytime temperatures between 60-80 degrees, low humidity, and cloudless skies, we’re enjoying our back garden and the rapidly growing herbs.I’m wrapping up my one-on-one “Pick My Brain” coaching sessions with all those travel writers and aspiring writers who signed up. These mentoring consultations were sure popular! We’ve had writers from four countries participating: USA, England, Canada, and France. With so many people re-launching their post-Covid travel writing, these 90-minute sessions were customized to meet their specific needs. This was a diverse age group. The women (plus one guy) who signed up ranged from 28–75 years! I’ve been answering their questions about where to find magazines to pitch their stories to; creating solid query letters that sell their stopries; promoting themselves better on their social media; expanding their freelance writing market by writing for non-travel magazines; selling stories before they visit their destinations; landing complimentary travel assistance; reselling their travel stories, and much more. We’ll be offering our customized coaching service again early in the 2024 New Year. Watch this newsletter for our next round. I’m excited to be planning two assignments for a classic car magazine on August. First, I’ll be in Canton, Ohio, visiting their Classic Car Museum, then in the small town of Eagles Mere (population 151!) Pennsylvania, touring their renowned classic car museum. These will be my 23rd and 24th assignments for this automobile enthusiasts’ publication, starting back in 2011. I'm looking forward to our trips and writing about these excellent museums. Later this year our international travel kicks off with 3 months in Vietnam. We’re still planning our itinerary. Of course, it will include Da Nang — where we lived for 4.5 years and a week-long cruise down the mighty Mekong River
from Saigon to Cambodia.

MORE RESOURCES FOR TRAVEL WRITERSFeatured Book: The Complete Guide to Query Letters for Travel WritersOur best-selling eBook, The Complete Guide To Query Letters For Travel Writers, shows you everything you need to know about crafting compelling query letters to sell your travel articles to magazine editors.Well-written query letters convince magazine editors that you have an exciting travel story their readers will absolutely love. In sixteen years of travel writing I’ve had more than 1,000 stories published in 200 magazines, journals, newspapers, in-flights, on-boards, specialty magazines, and travel websites – and they all started with a query letter. I know how to write killer query letters that work, and I wrote this eBook to show you how to do it. This is different from all other query letter books because you get 20 sample query letters that worked for me. These are actual query letters I used successfully to get articles published in print magazines. Each sample query letter comes with a clear explanation of the key things that
sold the idea successfully. And you can use my samples to create a template for your own query letters, using the same words and layout.
