Issue #390: Are Press Passes Useful or Effective? March 14, 2022 |
Greetings Fellow Travel Writers! . . . and WELCOME all new subscribers. Thanks for joining us.
WHERE WE ARE NOWThis is our fourth day in Zagreb, Croatia and already we’ve taken an “Exploring Zagreb” tour and a “Croatian Cuisine & History” tour. Enjoyed them both immensely as we come to grips with this new destination, its people, & its food. We’re finding this city of 804,000 to be friendly & welcoming — and quite chilly. It’s the coldest place we’ve been in more than seven years, with daytime temps in the low 40’s (F) and overnight temps in the 20s. Brrrr. Zagreb is Croatia’s capital, the largest city and it's the 50th country I have visited! More about this city in the next newsletter. WORKSHOP REGISTRATION IS OPEN!You can still register for our workshops - we still have a few seats left.If you sign up for BOTH workshops -- The Complete Package-- you save $800. Or, you can save $100 off the regular price of each individual workshops: Our Travel Writing Workshops Are The Best ANYWHERE!Here are eight reasons why you won't find better workshops anywhere else:1. Roy Walks the Talk The workshops are taught by prolific international travel writer Roy Stevenson, who has more than 1,000 published articles in 200+ regional, national, and international magazines, newspapers, trade journals, custom publications, specialty magazines, in-flights, on-boards, and online travel magazines. Few travel writers ever crack the 1,000 article barrier, and even fewer have cracked the 200 publications mark — Roy has done both and will show you how he does it.
Roy has coached more than 100 travel writers to great successes. While working with these writers, he noticed they continually make recurring writing errors.
He’ll show you how to parlay your travel writing assignments into free or discounted travel, meals, tours, accommodations, spa treatments, and entry into tourist attractions and museums. You’ll save thousands of dollars in travel expenses once you know how to parlay your assignments.

Editorial: Do you have a Travel Writer’s Press Pass or Members ID Card?Have you paid for a subscription to a travel writer’s group that includes a member’s “Press Pass” or “Members ID Card”?If so, you’re wasting your money and possibly endangering your life! One travel writer’s network recently announced they are no longer issuing press passes to its members. Here’s what they say: “The world has changed. For a variety of reasons, and far too often now, a press pass is not worth the plastic it’s printed on, and in some parts of the world it might endanger your safety. Press passes are losing effectiveness. The journalism profession is becoming more and more risky. Journalists are being jailed or killed in increasing numbers.” I wholeheartedly agree! You might say, “But I’m just a travel writer, not a political journalist. I’m harmless.” The problem is, journalists of any stripe are fair game to fanatics. The people who would do you great harm DON’T CARE if you’re a political reporter, a travel writer, a business writer, a novelist, or any other kind of journalist. They do not differentiate between different types of writers. They may not even know there are different types of journalists. To them, you’re another journalist who can be brutally exploited for publicity for their cause. There are numerous other reasons why you no longer need a travel writer’s press card or member’s ID card - if you ever needed one. A professional business card works just fine as your “press pass” if you need to show some proof of your occupation when you’re on assignment. We recommend that when you travel overseas, you simply say you’re a “Tourist” on immigration forms, at the immigration counter, and in conversations with strangers. You’re less likely to become a target in today’s volatile world. Want to join a travel writing association? There are several travel writer’s groups out there and it’s difficult to know which ones can serve your particular needs. This article lists the top four travel writer’s associations. This Week's Featured PostSuccessful Travel Writers & Their SecretsWhile mentoring more than 100 novice travel writers in my coaching program I’ve noticed that some of them get more travel stories published than others.Because I’m always looking for what makes successful travel journalists tick, I’ve studied their writing habits. And I’ve come up with some interesting conclusions. You might think the more prolifically published writers are better writers than the less-productive ones. Or, do they simply dream up better travel stories that sell well? These are not the main reasons why some get published more than others. Read on to find out
the five things that successful travel writers do
to break into travel writing.
